We want a bull with a clean front end, plenty of muscling on top and extra rib is always appreciated.
On EPDs we choose light birth weights, with a good yearling weight ratio. We also look closely at EPDs for the $en, (which is the cost of maintaining the cow.) Our bulls are wintered lightly as calves, letting them grow and mature into breeding athletes. We feel too much of a high energy ration can hurt their longevity and also their ability to consume courser feeds, as they become herd sires later in life. When they are one year old, we weigh and scrotal measure the bulls. Any that pass the perimeters we set out for them go out to pasture to develop on grass. In the fall, we bring them back in and winter them again. This brings them back into their second year as prime breeding machines. At C & L Beasley Cattle we feel the two year old bull is at the right maturity for fellow ranchers to get successful conception on their cows. The bulls we sell are meant to last- as they have such a solid upbringing behind them an our nutritional program is designed for longevity.
